1. To restart quickly hold shift before
you press restart, let go 2 seconds after the screen goes black (or 2 seconds
after the screen "it is now safe to turn off your computer goes away."
If you hold it too long you will start up in safe mode.
2. To switch between windows use
alt + tab.
3. If you use the same folder constantly
and it is "buried" deep in your computer and you want to get to it easier,
create a shortcut to it on the desktop.
4. To change the appearance of an
icon, right click it, go to properties, click the shortcut tab, then click
change icon. This only
works on shortcuts.
5. If you don't want windows to
open separate windows each time you click an icon in my computer, go to
view, options, click the folder tab, and click browse folders by using
a single window that changes...
6. To see accurately how much memory
you have left, right click the drive, click properties then click the general
tab.
7. To keep your computer running
smoothly should do a disk defrag and scan disk once every week.
8. To close close a window using
the keyboard the command is usually alt F4.
9. To copy a disk from one disk
to another (usually A: to A:) Put the source disk into drive A, go
to my computer, right click the disk drive and click copy disk. Half
way through you need to put the destination disk in. IMPORTANT:
This copies the ENTIRE disk not just one file, and the information on the
destination disk is wiped out.
10. If your computer freezes try
pressing control + Alt + Delete, this may restart it. If that does
not work hit your reset button if you have one, if not you may just have
to turn the power off.
11. Pressing Esc in the middle of
a drag aborts it.
12. Create a shortcut to your printer
by clicking on your Start menu, then Settings, then Control Panel, then
Printers, and
dragging a printer icon to the Desktop.
You can then drag documents to the printer icon and print them instantly.
13. Hold down the SHIFT key when
you drag and drop something with the left mouse button. You will get the
same context
menu as if you had dragged and dropped
with just the right mouse button.
14. To delete files without sending
them to the recycle bin, select the file or files to be deleted. Right-click
the selection and hold the Shift key down while selecting Delete.
15. To "backtrack" to a folder's
parent directory, just press the backspace key while in that folder's window.
Repeated performance of this operation will take you all the way to C:>
16. Press F2 to rename a file or
folder quickly.
17. To get to the top of a folder
window quickly, press CTRL+HOME. To get to the bottom, press CTRL+END.
18. To turn off that "are you sure
you want to delete this" screen, go to Recycle Bin Properties and uncheck
Display Confirmation.
19. If you have a Windows keyboard,
you can press WINKEY+M to minimize all open windows.
20. To get a screen shot in Windows,
you don't need a fancy graphics program. Simply press the Print Screen
key on your keyboard and Windows puts a bitmap of your screen in the clipboard
which is available to paste in any application.
21. In Netscape to go back you can
use alt + left. To go forward it is alt + right.
22. To Quickly stop a web page from
loading hit esc.
23. To do a search for a word or
phrase on a specific page use control + F.
24. If you install a lot of software,
save yourself some time by creating shortcuts on your desktop to A:\SETUP.EXE
and A:\INSTALL.EXE. Also it might be a good idea to create shortcuts to
your cd-rom drive SETUP.EXE and INSTALL.EXE.
25. Keeping programs minimized allows
them to sometimes run faster.
26. Holding control while dragging
will create a copy of the file.
27. If you have a Windows keyboard,
you can press WINKEY+M+SHIFT to restore windows.
